- Cut the gem squash in half through the middle and scoop out the seeds.
- Lightly sprinkle the cut halves with salt and microwave them upside down on a dinner plate until the flesh is fork-tender.
- Alternatively, place the squash in a saucepan with lightly salted water for stovetop cooking until the flesh can be easily pierced with a fork.
- Traditional South African Method:
- Halve the gem squash and place it upside down in a potjie over an open fire.
- Let the gem squash absorb flavors from stews while cooking.
- Cheesy Twist:
- Fill a halved gem squash with creamed sweetcorn.
