Gem squash is indeed a beloved vegetable in South Africa. It’s a member of the summer squash family. These little gems are sure to bring back some yummy , wonderful memories!

Here are a couple of ways to enjoy gem squash:

  1. Steaming or Boiling:
    • Cut the gem squash in half through the middle and scoop out the seeds.
    • Lightly sprinkle the cut halves with salt and microwave them upside down on a dinner plate until the flesh is fork-tender.
    • Alternatively, place the squash in a saucepan with lightly salted water for stovetop cooking until the flesh can be easily pierced with a fork.
  2. Traditional South African Method:
    • Halve the gem squash and place it upside down in a potjie over an open fire.
    • Let the gem squash absorb flavors from stews while cooking.
  3. Cheesy Twist:
    • Fill a halved gem squash with creamed sweetcorn.
    • Generously cover it with cheese (like Gorgonzola, Brie, or mozzarella) and bake it in the oven for a delightful cheesy gem squash!
